Sign in to iCloud
Before you can start adding friends to your Apple Watch, you’ll need to make sure you’re signed in to iCloud on both your iPhone and your watch. iCloud is Apple’s cloud storage and synchronization service, which allows you to access your contacts, calendars, and more across all your Apple devices.
To sign in to iCloud on your iPhone, go to Settings and tap on your name at the top of the screen. Then select “iCloud” and enter your Apple ID and password. If you don’t have an Apple ID, you can create one by tapping on “Get a Free Apple ID”.
Once you’re signed in to iCloud on your iPhone, your contacts will automatically be synced with iCloud. Now, it’s time to sign in to iCloud on your Apple Watch.
To sign in to iCloud on your Apple Watch, open the “Settings” app on your watch. Scroll down and tap on “Passwords & Accounts”, then select “Add Account”. From the list of available accounts, choose “iCloud” and enter your Apple ID and password.
After signing in to iCloud on your Apple Watch, your contacts will be synchronized and available for you to add as friends on your watch. It’s important to note that you’ll need to have internet connectivity on both your iPhone and Apple Watch for them to sync properly.
Add contacts to your iPhone
Before you can add friends to your Apple Watch, you’ll need to have the contacts saved on your iPhone. There are a couple of ways you can add contacts to your iPhone:
- Manually: To add a new contact manually, open the “Contacts” app on your iPhone and tap on the “+” icon in the top right corner. Enter the contact’s name, phone number, email address, and any other details you want to include. Once you’ve entered all the information, tap on “Done” to save the contact.
- Import from another device: If you have contacts saved on another device, such as your old smartphone, you can easily import them to your iPhone. There are several methods to do this, depending on the device you’re importing from. One common method is to export the contacts as a vCard (.vcf) file and then import it to your iPhone. You can do this through email, cloud storage services, or even by connecting your devices with a cable.
- Sync with an online service: If you use an online service like Google Contacts, Microsoft Outlook, or iCloud, you can sync your contacts with your iPhone. To do this, go to the “Settings” app on your iPhone, select “Passwords & Accounts”, and then choose the account you want to sync with. Make sure the “Contacts” toggle is enabled so that your contacts will be synced to your iPhone.
Once you’ve added your contacts to your iPhone, they will automatically sync with iCloud if you have signed in to iCloud on your device. This means that your contacts will be available to add as friends on your Apple Watch.
Enable Contacts in Apple Watch settings
In order to add friends to your Apple Watch, you’ll first need to ensure that the Contacts app is enabled on your watch. Here’s how you can do it:

It’s important to note that in order to enable Contacts on your Apple Watch, you need to have already signed in to iCloud and synced your contacts with your iPhone. This ensures that your updated contact list is available on your watch.
Once you have enabled the Contacts app on your Apple Watch, you’re ready to start adding friends and customizing your Friends wheel.

By taking advantage of the ability to customize the friend’s display name, you can tailor your Apple Watch experience to your preferences and create a more personalized and intuitive way to access and communicate with your friends.

Sync your contacts with iCloud if changes aren’t reflected
If you’ve made changes to your contacts on your iPhone but those changes aren’t being reflected on your Apple Watch, it’s likely that the contacts haven’t synced properly with iCloud. - Select “iCloud” and make sure the toggle next to “Contacts” is enabled. If it’s already enabled, you can try toggling it off and then back on again.
- If you’re prompted, choose whether you want to merge or replace your contacts on iCloud. It’s generally recommended to choose the option to merge, as this ensures that any existing contacts on iCloud are not overwritten.
- Wait for a few moments to allow your iPhone to sync the changes with iCloud.
- On your Apple Watch, open the “Settings” app.
- Scroll down and select “Contacts”.
- Toggle the switch next to “Contacts” to enable it, if it’s not already enabled.
- Wait for a few moments for your Apple Watch to sync with iCloud and reflect the changes in your contacts.
By syncing your contacts with iCloud, you ensure that any changes you make on your iPhone are synced across all your Apple devices, including your Apple Watch. This ensures that your contact list is consistently up to date and accessible on all your devices.
It’s worth noting that the syncing process may take some time, especially if you have a large number of contacts or if there are network connectivity issues. If the changes still aren’t reflected on your Apple Watch after waiting for a reasonable amount of time, you can try restarting both your iPhone and Apple Watch.

Excluding contacts from the Friends feature
If there are certain contacts in your iPhone’s contact list that you do not want to include in the Friends feature on your Apple Watch, you have the option to exclude them. This allows you to personalize and streamline the contacts displayed on the Friends wheel. Here’s how you can exclude contacts from the Friends feature:
- On your iPhone, open the “Apple Watch” app.
- Scroll down and tap on “Contacts”.
- Toggle off the switch next to any contacts that you wish to exclude from the Friends wheel. They will no longer appear on the wheel.
- Alternatively, you can tap “Custom” and manually select which contacts you want to include on the Friends wheel. This gives you more control over the specific contacts that are displayed.
- Once you’ve made your selections, exit the settings and open the Contacts app on your Apple Watch.
- The excluded contacts will no longer be visible on the Friends wheel, allowing you to focus on the contacts that you interact with most frequently.
By excluding contacts from the Friends feature, you can keep the Friends wheel more streamlined and tailored to your preferences. It’s particularly useful if you have a large number of contacts and want to prioritize the ones you communicate with most often.
It’s important to note that excluding contacts from the Friends feature does not remove them from your iPhone’s contact list. It only affects their visibility on the Friends wheel of your Apple Watch. Therefore, you can still access their contact information through the Contacts app on your watch if needed.
By utilizing the option to exclude contacts from the Friends feature, you can customize and optimize the display of the Friends wheel to suit your specific communication needs and preferences.
Adding friends to the Dock feature

By adding friends to the Dock, you can have even quicker access to their contact information and perform actions such as call, message, or use apps that support the Dock feature. This can be especially useful if you have a select few friends that you interact with frequently.
It’s important to note that the contacts you add to the Dock are separate from the ones in the Friends wheel. Adding a contact to the Dock does not automatically add them to the Friends wheel and vice versa. This gives you the flexibility to customize both the Dock and the Friends wheel according to your preferences.
By utilizing the option to add friends to the Dock feature, you can streamline and optimize your Apple Watch experience, making it even more efficient and convenient to communicate with your most important contacts.

For example, you can send quick messages with emojis using the Digital Touch feature, make calls using Siri, or even send your heartbeat and sketches to friends with the Apple Watch’s unique communication capabilities.
- Consider complications on your watch face: Complications are small snippets of information that can be added to your watch face. Some watch faces, such as Infograph or Modular, allow you to add a Friends complication, which displays a subset of your favorite contacts. This can be an alternative way to quickly access your friends directly from the watch face.
- Regularly update and organize your contacts: As your contact list evolves, it’s a good practice to periodically review and update your friends on the Apple Watch. Remove contacts you no longer communicate with frequently and add new friends who become more important in your life.
- Enjoy a personalized communication experience: With your friends set up on your Apple Watch, you can now enjoy the convenience and efficiency of staying connected on your wrist. Easily access contact information, send messages, make calls, and utilize apps that support friend interactions, all with just a few taps on your Apple Watch.
By completing these final steps, you’ll ensure that your Apple Watch friend setup is tailored to your specific communication needs and preferences. It’s an opportunity to create a personalized and intuitive experience that allows you to effortlessly connect with your friends at any time.
