Remembering Reed Ryan
The University of Minnesota Duluth community is in mourning following the tragic and sudden passing of football player Reed Ryan. The 22-year-old defensive end collapsed during a workout earlier this month and unfortunately did not survive. In memory of Reed, the university’s athletic department has planned a series of tributes to honor his life and contribution to the Bulldogs football team.

Throughout this weekend’s home games, all Bulldogs sports teams will observe a moment of silence to commemorate Reed Ryan. This somber moment will allow the entire UMD community to reflect on Reed’s impact as a teammate and an individual.
Ribbons and Decals
As a symbol of solidarity and remembrance, the UMD volleyball team will wear ribbons with Reed Ryan’s jersey number, 99, during their game against Wayne State College in the NCAA II Central Regional tournament. Moreover, there is a possibility that the UMD hockey team will wear #99 decals on their helmets as they take the ice in upcoming matches.
An Ongoing Tribute
Reed’s memory will continue to be honored throughout the athletics seasons. The university’s spokesperson from UMD Athletics assured that the tributes will be ongoing, serving as a reminder of Reed’s impact on the minds and hearts of every staff member and student-athlete.
A Promising Career
Reed Ryan, a redshirt senior, joined the Bulldogs for his final collegiate season. Prior to his time at UMD, he played four seasons at North Dakota State University on a full scholarship. Reed was known for his talent on the field, accumulating a total of eight tackles and one sack during his time with the Bulldogs. Beyond football, he was also a double major in professional sales and marketing.
The funeral services for Reed Ryan will be held on Saturday in Middleton, Wisconsin. This solemn occasion will provide an opportunity for family, friends, and the UMD community to come together and pay their final respects.
Reed Ryan’s untimely passing has left a void in the University of Minnesota Duluth community. However, through the planned tributes and ongoing remembrance, his spirit and impact will forever live on.
